Recently, some of our favorite power women gathered to the 2014 Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. From Lupita Nyong’o to Tamera Mowry, these women were simply stunning in their vibrant colored outfits. Lupita’s acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the star studded event. Reportedly, invited guest were teary eyed as the humble actress accepted the award for Breakthrough Performance of the Year. During her speech, Lupita talked about her past struggles with self image, focusing on her complexion.
I remember a time when I too felt un-beautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned.
,the actress confessed.
Towards the end of her speech, Lupita talks about being inspired by Alek Wek, a celebrated model who had a complexion similar to hers. Lupita closed her speech by saying,
…And my mother again would say to me you can’t eat beauty, it doesn’t feed you and these words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.
I think we can all agree that Lupita Nyong’o is gorgeous! Check out all of the women who were honored at the Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon.
